about
  • fijuu is a 3D, audio/visual installation. Using a PlayStation-style gamepad, the player(s) of fijuu dynamically manipulate 3D instruments to make improvised music. fijuu is built using the open source rendering engine OGRE and runs on Linux. in the future fijuu will be released as a Linux live CD project, so players can simply boot up their PC with a compatible gamepad plugged in, and play without installing anything (regardless of operating system). This effectively turns the domestic PC into a console for game based audio performances.

  • See the project outline for a quick overview of Fijuu2.

    piksel

pix and i are at bek's 4th compile fest in bergen, norway. piksel04 is turning out to be a productive mosh of talent and code with workshops, performances and plenty of time in the lab. we're taking the opportunity to look over new developmental directions for fijuu and getting tons of feedback from everyone here at the event.

    news from the future

at the risk of plucking too hard at the delicate threads of space-time, i bring you news from the near future. we have just recieved word that fijuu has been awarded an honourable mention in the transmediale.05 competition. so come february 2005, everybody remember to look surprised.

    modify this

fijuu appears at the California game art festival Alt-Ctrl starting today, and will be on show right into November. if you're in the area come down and check it out. neither pix and i will be in town, but let us know what you think all the same!

    showreel

contrary to my last post, i have put together yet another fijuu video. this is a 6min showreel of the current state of fijuu that we are including in a few applications to upcoming festivals. in a final attempt to make a video that can be played by just about anything, i've encoded it in the somewhat dated MPEG1 codec. the cost of universal viewability is bandwidth, so the 6mins weighs in at a hefty 65Mb! the video starts with a cut of the first tank1 video, but the rest is all new. so, grab it and let us know what you think.

thanks again to uli for managing the leftmost 176x288 pixels.

    revideo

    hey...

i've encoded another version of the first video in a supposedly out-of-the-box-windows-friendly format (6.18Mb). of course, my real problem is making something that works nicely for the mac. if there are any mac savvy mencoder/ffmpeg users who want to send me a commandline that will make mac players happier than my current attempts, i would be most appreciative.

ideally a format that works nicely on both of these platforms without needing to sacrifice yet more quality would be nice.

i'll put more effort into researching this myself when we actually have a new video to show. since we both seem to have very short attention spans, that will probably be when it looks considerably different than it does now.

    todo and reclaimer

after a month workshopping with fijuu in the 'Belgian Mountains' for the excellent foamies, we are back at the studio prepping for the next incarnation of fijuu. pix has coded up a context for wave-like mesh deformation, and i also want to work on producing a more meaningful use of the OSC feedback (where sound manipulates the mesh, alongside the inverse).

these are things we didn't get around to ironing out prior to the sonar gig.

the next stage of development is really about making best possible use of what is in the engine already, built around a single multi-headed and persistent 'machine' comprised of many instruments. this breaks from the current configuration where instruments are organised as separate 'scenes'.

reclaimer:, thanks to all those people posting us in their blogs and newsgroups etc. but, send us an email if you have any questions as it seems you are all (excepting neural) just copying the tired description from the index page ;)

    nifff

i just got back from a fijuu presentation at nifff in neuchatel switzerland. the talk was enjoyed though it was less than half as much fun without pix smoking the sequencer.

pedro tells us he has a copy of the performance in sonar as a whopping mp4. i'll let you know when this is up on the site.

    stereoscopy
say hello to the next video. this is a split screen video showing the manta object squealing away as the seq doles out minimal techno. mantaseq1. also in divx format, but weighing in at a slightly slimmer 4MB.

thanks to uli for manning manta.

    obligatory video problems
for anyone having trouble viewing the video, i neglected to mention that they are in divx format. i don't know where the cool kids get their divx codecs these days, but unsurprisingly divx.com has codecs for mac os and windows. apparently, they even have a superfluous linux version.

if you are still having trouble with the videos, harass me.

    what he said
yes, here is the first movie. originally intended as an "is this thing on?" test, but people seem to like it, so we'll make it public, 76 seconds with the tank.

working on improving the quality. more videos soon.

    nu screenz

i've posted a few screens of fijuu with the new look. amongst those you can see examples of fijuu running in splitscreen (2 player) mode. currently there aren't any goodies of the sequencer using the trackwide amplification feature, but pix might post a few soon. so check back!

    reanimated

bascially retreived core motor functions after sonar though still have problems perceiving moving images.

as pix says the presentation went very well and the performance far better than we expected. post performance we were set upon by a veritable tapas of geeks, gamers and artfans with alot of super things to say about the show.. a few of them had cameras one of which was from channel five in spain. you may be able to find some video of the show on bbc.com or flaix tv soon enough if the publishing contract was any indication.

in the meantime if anyone out there got documentation let us know. we need DV of the event for this blog! i'll be posting a whole bunch of screens soon enough,

    life after sonar
well, the experience of sonar was stressful but ultimately great. from the accounts i've heard, it sounds like the show was very well received. there is a pic of us being rockstars in the sonar photo report ;)

fijuu was under some very rapid development in the days leading up to the show. many thanks to the very accomodating and skilled sonar tech-devel staff for the space. i think delire will be posting some screens of the new look very soon.

p.s. does anyone know what happened to the wiretap site? or does anyone have the java version handy?

    OSCillation
removed satisfying slabs of code in the early hours of this morning, replacing the hastily coded FUDI communication with OSC. many thanks to the very nice OSC implementation found in the wiretap project (down?). objects can now dance to sound analysis data coming from PD.

sadly not something that can really be captured in a screenshot, so you'll have to come to sonar ;)

    der pad

hehe well now it actually has a life. if you dont put your thumb where it is intended to go it's actually quite playable. the 'squid' form now breathes while spreading and spinning it's arms around on a d-pad event. today i'm getting onto special attacks for the 'transformer' and the pink node. hopefully i won't have a problem with times between fijuu and pd; the playtime of the sample needs to be as long as the nipol time of the animation. largely the special attacks will just be bang events that can be used compositionally as embellishments so no control of their actual precipitation is really needed.

it would be super cool to have a pulse like scale nipol for the legs as i want to make them spit out or throw a giant light particle..

i'll check in my tcl script as anim-meffect2.tcl from now on so it doesn't break your tcl. the rest of the assets will go up later today..

    special attacks

the D-Pad on the gamepad has been gawking at me with it's empty eyes so i'm putting it to good use as a 'special attack' controller for the meshwarp instruments. each meshwarp instrument will have several extra modes that alter the signal and blast the screen with a veritable eyestorm of specialfx. the D-Pad reminds me of some kind of pie; you prod at it and it changes sometimes..

hopefully it stands up to the brutality i am about to unleash upon it's unemployed buttoness.

    ping!
clearly a very new new blog for a very new project. we're getting ready for a big show at sonar

i'm currently getting as many assets as i can together, finishing the art and scripting for the first four 'meshwarp' instruments.
pix is working on the code for the new sequencer.

hopefully we'll have time for a running filterbank..

anyway for those of you wondering where the name "fijuu" comes from, it's slavic onomatopoiea for an object rushing past the ears.

check out the new screenshots in the screens section. some of the new black spider meshes loom great when under the influence of my gamepad..
