about
  • fijuu is a 3D, audio/visual installation. Using a PlayStation-style gamepad, the player(s) of fijuu dynamically manipulate 3D instruments to make improvised music. fijuu is built using the open source rendering engine OGRE and runs on Linux. in the future fijuu will be released as a Linux live CD project, so players can simply boot up their PC with a compatible gamepad plugged in, and play without installing anything (regardless of operating system). This effectively turns the domestic PC into a console for game based audio performances.

    fijuu presentation at 'mc'

just returned from giving a short talk and performance at the very well facilitated Mladinski Center in Slovenia. marta came along and worked the sequencer brilliantly, while I noodled on the meshwarp instruments. the sequencer was the star of the night - locals coming up later and toying with it for hours afterwards. this (and a few comments from the floor) has rejuvenated my interest in the seq somewhat but before I get too fidgety we have to finish this port to ogre first. regardless, thanks to pix's fine work the seq is already quite playable - after an hours practice the button mappings are really quite comfortable.

    ../

currently in copenhagen, denmark, serving as artist in residence at the technical university of copenhagen. as part of my stay i have plenty of time to continue working on fijuu, and will be knuckling down on Ogre3D's new pyogre API to see how much of blender i can squeeze into Ogre3D itself. while i'm at it i may upload a few blender runtimes that sketch out ideas.

a bit unrelated, but i was very pleased to find it's possible to get reasonably convincing positional audio out of a blender runtime (linux only - arrow keys to move, left click and drag to aim. chmod +x bl_3d-sound will make it executable).

perhaps pix will be able to pull off a bit of this in fijuu's sound-engine - i've always been a sucker for doppler.

    access-space

i'm currently doing an artist residency at access-space in sheffield, UK. while here i'll be documenting my activities, should anyone be interested. while here i'll be making a kind of audio-only fijuu-inspired installation which, in combination with the graphics work i did on trg should help to lay a foundation for the fabled next version.

    the name

since it's obviously our #1 FAQ, here is the deal with the name:

"fijuu" is the slavic onomatopoeia for something rushing past your head (like a bullet, or low flying bird). the "j" is pronounced more like the english "y", so it is pronounced like "phew", or "fee-you". you are welcome to play around with the emphasis all you want, since it's basically a sound effect. i'd love to be all linus torvalds about the pronunciation, but to say "fee-jew", or "fee-zhou", is to miss the point.

    shoulder surfing

just a note to mention that fijuu is on display in the foyer of Haus Der Kulturen Der Welt in Berlin until the 8th, as part of transmediale04. tonight was the opening, and being unable to resist, i spent most of the evening spying on the controller-technique of the players.

i'm surprised how many people instinctively mash the d-pad and not the analog-sticks. i guess i'm underestimating the cultural influence of the super-NES. still, most people eventually bump one of the sticks and discover the mesh-warping juiciness which results. i even saw a few brave souls studying the cheat-sheet, trying to master the controls of the sequencer.

    hey, no we're not...

thought it was about time to put an update in here, since we obviously aren't in norway anymore.

we are now both working on the TRG project with f0am. i'm hacking away with the OGRE engine. the results will be the basis of the projected visuals for TRG, and will most likely form the basis of the next version of fijuu aswell. a big thanks to the f0amies who have given us the opportunity to develop a system that will be useful in both contexts.
